In this video, originally shared by X user DogeDesigner, a user searches for “where can I vote for Harris” and “where can I vote for Trump” on Google. A Harris search brings up Google’s 2024 US Elections panel. This panel includes a map that you can use to find your voting location. That’s not the case with Trump’s search.
But there are complicating factors here. Harris is also the name of a county in Texas. Voting maps will also appear when people search for terms and locations such as “where can I vote?” Try searching for things like “where can I vote in Brooklyn” or “where can I vote in Tampa” and you’ll see what comes up. And in fact, at that time, The Verge When staff tried to search for “where can I vote for Harris,” a sidebar mentioning Texas appeared next to the voting map.
Google responded directly to Musk regarding X and confirmed his explanation. The newspaper blamed the Texas county for “the ‘Voted to’ panel driving some specific searches,” and noted that the same thing happened with the North Carolina county’s “Vance Where to Vote.” did. The company said in a subsequent post that the issue was “currently fixed,” and as of publication, the voting map no longer appears when searching for “where to vote for Harris (or Vance).”
The company also said that “few people actually search for polling places this way.” If you do If you need to find your polling place, you can always bypass Google and go to places like Vote.org.
